The British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF) is the leading body for the UK Safety Industry. The have set up the Registered Safety Supplier Scheme which is a mark of approval that the company you're dealing with complies with the relevant regulations.
They say "All PPE must be correctly tested and certified to meet the appropriate European standard. Unfortunately, the quantity of non-approved product being sold into the UK is on the increase. Such products should not be used for business because they contravene safety legislation".
